.In answer to his question it was AVG that caused the problem on both PCs.

Original question:
AVG free was installed in my new windows 10 asus PC. I cannot open apps. Cannot access settings and it will not shut down. HOW DO I SORT THIS AND REMOVE AVG. I have used AVG for 10 years on desktop, laptop, phone with no problem. Reluictantly I no longer trust AVG and intend removing it from all my hardware. How can you trust a virus protection that makes yoyur new PC unusable

Hello William,
I understand this must be upsetting. May I ask how you narrowed this down to AVG? Did you uninstall AVG and check if the issues with your PC is resolved? If not, please uninstall AVG using AVG Clear tool and reinstall it.
Download and run AVG Clear tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe. This tool will help with removing antivirus component of AVG 2017 and its traces.

Open tool
User Account control - click "Yes"
Windows safe mode - click "No"
Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)
Click "Uninstall"
Click "Restart computer".

Hello William,

Thank you for uninstalling AVG and letting us know that your PC has no issues.
Actually, we have to find what is exactly causing this issue, hence I recommend you to install the AVG Antivirus free again.
To download the installation file, please use this link: http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/Antivirus_Free_1817.exe
If the issue persists, do let us know and do not uninstall the program.
