When you last paid for a license online, recurring billing is enabled by default to so say help you not forget to renew. You should have been informed of this in your email/purchase detail web info page.
You should be able to request a refund from them stating you do not wish to continue your protection. You will need to login to http://account.avg.com and go to subscriptions. Then click the link to stop recurring billing. You have 30 days from the expiry of your previous license to cancel a new recurring one and claim a refund. Once you've logged into http://account.avg.com you should see a chat icon in the bottom right of the web page. Use that to talk to them directly.
