Hello Mr P,

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.
Thank you for you appreciation regarding our AVG program.
We are sorry to lose a valuable customer. This is indeed disappointing.
We will take this as a serious note and assure you that we will make necessary changes and bring back your trust again.
When you had this issue did you try reinstalling your AVG program once?
If you had tried reinstallation of AVG once this issue should have got fixed.

Hello Zigmund.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused.
Sorry to know that you had left AVG. This indeed disappointing.
As discussed in this post earlier, only on our "2016" version there is a option to update the program on a specific time but as you said there is no option to completely disable the Update option.
The reason behind this is because updates for an antivirus program are highly necessary and if it is ignored or delayed then your PC will be vulnerable to latest viruses and threats.
So being a reputed security providing company we always think on how to protect our customers PC from threats.
We request you to submit your feedback to us via http://www.avg.com/product-feedback .
Thank you.

Hi All,
It is with great sadness that after using AVG for at least 8 years I have uninstalled it and installed Avira.  WHY?
Since an update about 3 months ago my computer would take at least 70 to 200 seconds to shutdown.  This is really bad when you consider I have a very high spec system and when AVG process's are stopped it takes no longer than 10 seconds.  Very annoying when you have just spent hundreds upgrading your computer.
But just enable it in your firewall I hear you cry… I run my computer with Zonealarm and require all programs to ask for internet access.  Why some might ask, I prefer to control all programs and no single program has automatic access.  Why AVG have decided to include this rediculous timeout I have no idea.
I am hoping someone from AVG reads this and corrects the mistake.  Also for those of you who remember the good old days when Norton was the best then they tried to go all big and bouncy, offering all sorts of add-ons and it slowly became a virus in itself, destroying any performance computers had back then.  It has taken them 10 years to try and remove that stigma, if they have at all…  AVG was the fastest, simplest and most reliable virus software out there… what happened??

Bon voyage AVG, you have been a trusted program!

Hello Mr P,
Thank you for your kind post and for your support of AVG products. It is customers like you that are helping to make AVG a household name. Thank you for choosing an AVG solution for your computer.

Thank you so much Alan Binch.  At last, words of reason.  In the last few days I have gone from being a staunch advocate of AVG, having installed countless numbers of the products both paid and free over the past decade, to being a totally disillusioned user who is about to rid my computer of all traces of AVG.

An AVG representative on a previous post advised that:  “Sorry to hear that. For your information in our antivirus program free, trial or paid version there is no option to disable the Updates”.  So it seems there is no consensus amongst AVG reps at to what the product actually does.  I would have gladly promoted my program to the paid version if it had met my requirements, however I am now bereft of any trust in this company and so will have to bight the bullet and seek out a suitable alternative virus checker that doesn’t need to wrestle away my control of my computer, and where the documentation and support isn’t cloaked in misinformation.

Zigmund,
Thank you for the information.
As we understand you wish to know how to update AVG program manually, is that right?
Thank you.

Gulam,
I though I was already sharing my negative experience with you in the preceding posts.  To assist you in understanding my issue I shall summarize past discussion as follows:

As a consequence of my rural situation I do not have a robust internet connection.  The bandwidth available at any particular time is variable and unpredictable.  There is also a heavy satellite tariff for prime time access.  It appears that AVG virus checking is no longer capable of allowing the user to determine when updates occur and don’t occur.  My real time use of the internet can therefore be severely compromised by uncontrollable AVG traffic.  This is not only a nuisance, it could be hazardous.  I have now removed AVG from my computer and am trialing alternate software.  I never thought I would find myself in this position, having used and promoted AVG software for over a decade.

That is correct.  This would extend to any significant AVG related internet traffic whether that was program components or virus definition lists.  I need to be able to initiate such downloads at a time of my choosing.  I need to pick a time when adequate bandwidth is available at economic tariff rates.

Thank you for the responses.  I have tried to use the removal tool and done a fresh re-instal of the latest free edition.  It is the same im afraid.  The issue appears to be if the process does not have internet access it timesout and stops the windows shutdown for between 100 and 230 seconds.  If it has internet access it is slightly quicker, but far longer than it used to be.

Zigmund, I use Zonealarm free firewall version 9.2.106.000 (which is about 2011) as this was the last version to work correctly (like Norton and now AVG it has been changed to have too many automatic features that are not needed or cannot be switched off).  This might be an option for you as I too have to use satlelite internet on some of my computers and using the zonalarm I can select which programs can use the internet on a live basis i.e. a pop-up box will ask for permission each time a program tries to access the internet so you can choose exactly when each one connects.  For those programs you are happy to connect all the time like browser you can select remember decission.

This is obvioulsy one of the issues with AVG as it can obvioulsy see I have an internet connection, but as I have not allowed it access through firewall it is just sat waiting, stopping my computer from shutting down.

I have reverted to Avira as it is generally faster on both boot up and shutdown.  It has simple controls and does not try to do anything you do not ask for, just like AVG used to be…  Why dont you include a PRO mode for AVG where you can choose exactly what you want it to do and when, and a AUTO mode for it to be fully automatic and big and bouncy, doing lots of wonderfull things that the average user is not bothered about?

I know change is supposed to be a good thing, but ask Synmatec and Microsoft what happens when you mess about with a good thing… Windows Vista was a big disaster but Windows 8… I think they were all smoking drugs when they chucked that out onto the market.  No wonder Windows 10 is free!

Again, many thanks for your help and I have a great deal of gratitude towards AVG as they have successfully protected my PC's and the 100 or so I have recommended to use AVG over the years.  I wish you the best of success for the future and hopefully one day I can come back to it.

Ciao Ciao!

Hello Zigmund,
We apologize for the inconvenience caused.
We understand how something like this will try your patience.
May I know the name of the AVG program installed on your system?
Have you tried to reinstall it using AVG remover tool?
Thank you.

Hello and thank you for the prompt reply.  I have tried re-installing and this fault is also on the other 2 computers I use with AVG.  It started with your last major update but I cannot remember when that was exactly, approximately 3-4 months.  I have been hoping it would have been fixed by now but no luck.  It appears to be the process attempting to comunicate via the internet and it timeouts stopping the PC from shutting down.

Many thanks.
