I understand the inconvenience.
Do you have any other antivirus program installed on the PC that shows AVG in passive mode?
Please provide the (screenshot) of AVG window that shows the passive mode message to assist further.

I have AVG installed on my 2 desktops and one is working as should but the other says that the computer is fully protected but when I look at the details it says the computer is in passive mode. I have a 2 year subscription for 3 computers with another 18 months to run. I have tried all the help suggestions from the AVG site but have not been able to find one that works.
