If that is the case, why then do I get a message when I actually open AVG saying that it needs to be updated and is four or ten days out of date?

Can AVG please make it easier to schedule scans - please place a link on the main menu on opening page, very difficult to find. 

I am also fed up with AVG telling me it is out of date - sometime four days sometimes ten days out of date, can't it automatically update like every other software package, or at least display a message automatically that it needs to be updated. 

I am very close to scrapping AVG and trying something else.

As explained by Willy, the AVG program will by default check for latest definitions and install them automatically. There was an issue recently with updating AVG virus definitions which has been fixed in a latest release. Please consider to uninstall and re install AVG Internet Security once to make sure you have the latest version running and to resolve further issues with updating.

Regarding the ast computer scan' data on AVG dashboard, it will get updated only when you start a scan by clicking on 'Scan computer' on main interface and not for any other scans. However, in the upcoming release of AVG the quick scan, deep scan and full computer scan or scheduled scan should be updated too.
