This isn't expected behavior.
Could you confirm the version of AVG software installed on your PC?
Open AVG, click Menu -> About.
Restart your PC once and verify this issue.

I notice since updating AVG Internet Security on my Desktop that the AVG icon  in the taskbar shows it is active even though I have not opened AVG Internet Security on screen. Is this normal?
