Thank you Bala. I didn't get round to doing what you suggested yesterday but opened up to do so this morning. A message box came up immediately Windows had started saying AVG needed to restart my computer, which it did, and now AVG works and, amazingly, is activated. I have no idea how or why but I am definitely not complaining! However, thanks for your assistance in getting things back to normal.
I asked for help with an AVG-won't-update problem and received advice - much appreciated - which was to uninstall AVG Internet security and then reinstall. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled but as installation finishes I get a message as follows: "AVGUI.exe - System error: The program can't start because ashTask.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." I have downloaded a copy of the ashTask.dll file and placed it both in the Windows SysWOW64 folder and in the AVG folder in Program Files (x86). I cannot move the ashTask.dll file into any of the sub-folders within the AVG folder because I hit permission problems and cannot overcome them. Any help would be appreciated as I now have no working anti-virus or internet security running on my computer.
