AVG Internet Security is slowing my computer down

I am running Windows XP Proffessional. If I run an Okla speed test I get a download speed of 10Mbps
with AVG connected and 30mbps when AVG is disabled. I have AVG VPN on my computer and that slows it down further. Anyone any ideas?

Alan,
One of the AVG technicians was able to fix the AVG Internet Security package slowing down my computer. However the AVG VPN package is still giving problems. The technicians have referred the case to the Netherlands AVG team for further research.
