AVG internet security update blocks firefox and thunderbird from starting

Hello Alison,

I understand the situation.
I request you to provide the screenshot of AVG program interface which will help us to assist further.
To take a screenshot please follow the instructions mentioned in this link: http://avgread.me/1aZxsAV and attach the image to this post.
You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

Having same problem as Original Poster and:

"Open AVG Internet Security, click on Menu->Settings->Components->Firewall->Customize->Network profile and change it to Private.

Open AVG Internet Security, click on Menu->Settings->Components->Firewall->Customize->System Rules and change all settings to Enabled."

…worked for me.

Turns out that Firefox is not blocking just AVG support, but Google, mozilla support, my webmail client, CNBC news channel, etc., but not all the time. Others with the problem have had the answer that it relates to internt security software and not something in Firefox.  I checked and Firefox responds appropriately when AVG is OFF.  Am I the only one having serious problems with this AVG "upgrade"?

"Open AVG Internet Security, click on Menu->Settings->Components->Firewall->Customize->Network profile and change it to Private.

Open AVG Internet Security, click on Menu->Settings->Components->Firewall->Customize->System Rules and change all settings to Enabled."

I think I'm getting the same problem again on my XP office computer (unless it's a Firefox problem this time), but that one doesn't seem to have updated to the ZEN dashboard, so I'm guessing it's still running the previous version of Internet Security.  Please could someone post the settings I need to change on the old version, because I can't work out what they are from the above?

Thanks.

Thanks Avinash, that seems to have solved the problems.  I can now open Firefox and Thunderbird while AVG is ON, and then they are behaving appropriately, not blocking sites like Google or CNBC for being non-secure (invalid certificates) and showing webpages fully, and not in text only.  I suspected it might have something to do with settings rather than a bad install, but had no idea what aspect was involved.
Thanks again - unfortunately it took a lot of time and work here before receiving the simple fix.

AVG Protection update today to AVG Internet Security does not allow Firefox of Thunderbird to open a window, although Task Manager shows they are running.  (Still using Windows XP)  It sometimes blocked Internet Explorer, and at other times I could not get the AVG window to open.  I tried the "Repair" instructions on AVG Protection in Control Panel but that failed to initialize correctly.  The interface looks like the new AVG Internet Security screen rather than the old AVG Protection one, but the listing in Control Panel was still for AVG Protection.  I downloaded Internet Security anew and then found that Control Panel showed both AVG Protection and AVG Internet Security installed.  I uninstalled AVG Protection and "repaired" AVG Internet Security.  It still will not allow Firefox or Thunderbird to start in their own windows although they are shown as running in Task Manager.
If I click on Support in the AVG menu, it does nothing as it has blocked Firefox.  However, if I turn off AVG protection, then I can start Firefox and Thunderbird an they will operate correctly when I turn AVG protection back on.  Then when I click on support in the AVG menu, it takes me here.
Is there a fix that will allow me to start Firefox or Thunderbird when AVG is running or is it time for new a-v software?  (A new computer that will run Windows 10 is still a little way off.)

Alan Binch - yes, XP SP3
Alok - did all of your second message and AVG still prevents Firefox and Thunderbird from opening in a window despite complete removal and clean install of AVG Internet Security.  But this time Firefox blocked access to AVG support as "insecure site" because of an improper certificate.  (Are you guys at war?)
Is there some way to "whitelist" Firefox and Thunderbird so that AVG does not block them, or to find out why AVG does not allow them to open in a window when Task Manager shows that they are running?  Why was this not a problem with AVG Protection prior to the update/upgrade but now is an issue?

It is disappointing, though, that this problem has been allowed to get through, when I see it was being reported as far back as April.

More…  Some web pages now display only as text, both in IE and in Firefox.  Is there any way that I can go back to using AVG Protection, which I paid for and worked fine, and get rid of the current AVG Internet Security?  Browsing the web, it seems that Zen/Internet Security have casued grief to a lot of people.

Hello Howard,
I understand the inconvenience caused. I am sure we will be able to fix this together. In this case, I request you to remove AVG completely along with any previous traces using the AVG clear tool/AVG Remover tool and then do a fresh installation of AVG Internet Security. This will ensure that none of the previous traces of AVG are left on your computer and you have an updated version. (1/2)

I am happy to hear that the issue is resolved. I appreciate your time and co-operation.

Alison, I agree and wasted about the same amount of time as you did.  While a bad install is always a possibility, the fact that Firefox would run (per Task Manager) but could not open a window while AVG was ON, but could be started when AVG was OFF and continued to run fine when AVG was subsequently turned ON, suggested strongly that something in AVG was blocking Firefox (and Thunderbird).  Since this version of AVG was new to me, I could not find where the problem was, but was convinced it had something to do with settings.  Avinash seems to have located the source of the problem and identified the "fix". I was surprised that this was not identified sooner, or that it is not featured prominently somewhere in 'support' as a potential fix, given the number of people with the problem.  That could save a lot of time for customers and AVG customer service.
