AVG Internet Security Will Not Run a Scan

I own a paid copy of AVG Internet Security. The last successful scheduled scan ran on 28 April. Since then the application simply will not run a scan. The scheduled scans don't run and if I click on "Scan  Whole Computer" that won't run either. I get the progress screen telling me that the scan has started, then it stalls on "66 items scanned" and "0%" in the progress bar.  From there, nothing happens. Nothing continues to happen for as long as I keep it running.
