Let's have a look at it together. Virus definitions should get updated automatically where product update may require manual update.
AVG Internet Security should display the error message as "Out of date".
Let us know the version of AVG you have installed and share the screenshot of AVG interface to check with it.

My AVG settings are set to automatic update, but it does not do so, and when it is out of date, it does not even inform me.  "WHY"
