AVG is warning that the virus definitions are out of date but failing to update

Hi Peter,

We're glad to help you with this.
Sometimes, this might happen if the downloaded patches are unable to get applied on the program.
From your description, we see that there is another AVG's setup running in the background. Hence, you're receiving the message while trying to repair.
We can either kill that task from Task manager or restart your computer once to check.
Meanwhile, let us know the version of AVG that is installed on your computer. To check this : Open AVG - Menu - About.

AVG is warning that the virus definitions are out of date. When I try to update, the update goes on continuously without effect.  I see from other users of AVG that this is a frequent problem.  AVG suggested solutions involve going to Apps and features and uninstalling – before seeking a repair.  I cannot get there because the message I get says “Setup is already running.  Please try to start the setup later.  View log and OK.  The net result is that I cannot fix the problem

Thank  you for providing us the info, Peter.
The latest version of AVG is recently released & it is 19.6.
To update the program's version : Open AVG - Menu - Settings - General - Update (left pane) - Program - Update. This process might require a restart to apply the patches. Please try the above step & let us know if it helps.

Your right that the problem is that I have two versions of AVG in operation.  One is a free AVG.  The other was paid for.  I don't know which is which and which runs out when

Appreciate your efforts so far, Peter.
We'd request to uninstall AVG Internet Security and re install it to resolve the issue. Click this link for steps to uninstall. Then, refer to instructions in this link on how to download and install latest version of AVG Internet Security.

I'd also like to inform that you have two copies of AVG Internet Security licenses. One of them is expiring on 9th Aug 2019 and set to automatically renew 15 days prior to the expiry date. The other license is valid till 8th June 2020. Are you using these licenses on two separate computers? If you are using only one computer, I can help you to cancel the automatic renewal for the license which is going to expire in August.

When I press Open avg - Menu - Settings - General, I don't see Update on left pane. It doesn;t appear to offer Program - Update as an option.  It simply shows the update that then keeps going without achieving anything.  Also 'Check for updates' doesn't operate

Peter, you should see 'Update' under 'General' settings. We'd request to repair AVG setup to resolve the issues with updating and install the latest version.

Open AVG - Menu - Settings - General - Troubleshooting. Then click on 'Repair App' and follow the instructions on your screen to complete the setup.

If you need anything else, do not hesitate to let us know.
