AVG Massive Memory Leak BUG (Version 20.7.3140)

That is no problem, Rakshith! Thank you for reporting this bug to the AVG developers. Have a good day!

Today, May 30, 2021, AVG started a massive memory leak again. I had to uninstall the software using AVG Clear and reinstalled the latest version of AVG Free from AVG's website. This stopped the memory leak, however the fresh install of AVG was causing my main disk usage to run at 100% and causing the system to run very slow. Unfortunately, I had to use AVG Clear again to completely remove the program for everything to return to normal. Please look into this bug. I am using Windows 8.1. Thank you!

Hello Adam,

Thank you for sharing the screenshot.
We request you to uninstall unnecessary applications and temporary files on your computer first.
You can run a deep scan with AVG and check for any issues.
This will improve the performance of your computer.
Please keep us updated.
Thank you.

Thank you Sreenu. I decided to uninstall Kaspersky Security Cloud, because I did not like it injecting javascript code into every webpage I visited and I also did not like it replacing all security certificates for HTTPS websites with its own certificate. So I re-installed AVG Free today and I can confirm this version is working fine (AVG version 21.5.3185 -build 21.5.6354.561). There is no memory leak, and the high disk usage eventually did drop back down to 0% where it should be (although it took some time). So everything is working good. Thank you!

Hi Santhosh, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, reinstalling the software is not possible at this time, since my PC is used for work and I cannot afford to have the system down. However, I can link to the original screenshots which I shared this morning. At the moment, Avast Free Antivirus is working well. so I will probably stay with it. I really do appreciate all AVG has done over the years for its users. Hopefully the bug with this update can be resolved so other users won't have their computers freeze from high RAM usage. Thank you!

Hi,

I was experiencing the same memory leak problem after updating to version 20.7.3140 yesterday.

After several hours of troubleshooting and trying this and that, eventually using this AVG option has helped to resolve that:

Menu / Settings / General / Troubleshooting / Reset To Default

After a reboot I was able to configure the program from scratch and there has been no reoccurrence of this memory leak problem so far.

Cheers,
Paweł

Hi Adam,

We are sorry to hear this.

We will help you to resolve the issue.

We request you to reinstall the program and check for the CPU Usgae.

Could you share us the screenshot of the CPU usage to investigate further?

You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on "Answer" & then click on the "Image" [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

Keep us posted.

You're welcome, Fran. Switching to Avast Free antivirus worked for me. The software shares most of the features with AVG except for the file shredder, and Avast owns AVG so the experience should be familiar to you. That said, AVG has been very reliable over the years. Hopefully the memory leak bug has been fixed so users won't run into this anymore.

Hello,
I am also having the same memory leak issue. couple of days back I notices my laptop became very slow. Upon checking I found that AVG Antivirus is taking up too much space in memory and also consuming the cpu usage. The CPU uses was around 25% and memory taken up was around 1600 MB. I unistalled AVG and then reinstalled. For two days it worked fine but today again it's taking more than 1600 MB in memory. Please help. I am attaching screenshots.
Thanks,
Sunil

Hello Adam. Thanks for your message.

I have been experiencing the same thing for a few days now and I was going crazy searching the internet and no one seemed to have this problem.  I have 32 Gb so, memory consumption grew to the total and the machine locked but in the task manager no process that was consuming excessively appeared.  Also, there are times when the process is very fast and other times very slow.

After doing a lot of testing of safe booting, stopping services and updating drivers, I have been about to reinstall the operating system. But yesterday I remembered that a few days ago an AVG update was installed, so yesterday I uninstalled it for testing, and it stopped happening.

Pawel, thanks for your advice.  Perhaps today I will reinstall AVG and test it.

Regards,

This drove me crazy today. I received the updated app around Sep 19. But it was the updated virus definitions today (Sep 27) that killed my computer.

Simple fix: uninstall AVG. Then update WIndows Defender definitions. Much better now.
