I appreciate your patience and efforts so far. Please try the below steps to uninstall AVG from MAC.
Open Finder > Applications > right click on AVG AntiVirus.app > select Show package contents > open Contents folder > double click on Uninstaller.app.
Alternatively, I recommend running this /Library/Application Support/AVGAntivirus/components/uninstall/Uninstall AVG Antivirus for Mac.
If the issue persists, please provide the screenshot of the error message.
I just downloaded AVG AntiVirus Free on my Mac today, using OS Sierra 10.12.6. Download went fine, but the initial computer scan (not even a deep virus scan) took 6.5 hours and it slowed my computer significantly, which I hadn't been expecting from the reviews I'd read.
After it was finished, I closed it, but I wanted to open it again to look around and see what kind of features it had. I couldn't get it to open at first, then it did open, then it closed itself and an error message appeared. I can't get it to open again from the icon.
I saw another user post this with instructions on commands to enter in Terminal- I tried that with no success. It said that the file wasn't recognized. Help!

Unfortunately, the first step for uninstalling AVG AntiVirus in Mac is to OPEN AVG AntiVirus. The whole problem is that I CAN'T open it.
If you have any other suggestions, that would be great.

Do you mean that you encountered this message 'No such file or directory' while trying to remove AVG Antivirus via utilities option?
