Hello Steve,
I would request you to download Avast Clear tool and run it on your PC to remove traces of Avast completely. Please refer the steps in this article https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility on how to download and run the Avast clear tool.

Uninstalled Avast as problems with upgrade, AVG software reports Avast running therefore in passive mode. have deleted all Avast files etc but AVG says its running. I am running vista
