Hi James,
We're glad to look into this & help you.
Initially, please restart your MAC once & check, if you haven't restarted it.
Sometimes, this might happen if few services are unable to initiate.
Also, clarify whether there are any other security software installed on your MAC.
Thanks for your help. I followed the direction to uninstall, reboot, and reinstall AVG. I was able to open the program, but was unable to start a scan because the program has been checking for updates to the virus definitions for an hour or more.
Hello James,
We apologize for the inconvenience.
In this regard, we'd suggest you to perform a clean installation by following the below steps & let us know if it helps :
- Uninstall AVG from your MAC , if you've completed the installation process.
- Open Finder
- In menubar select Go > Go to Folder…
- Type /Library/Application Support/ and hit the enter key
- Locate and delete AVGAntivirus folder
- Reboot computer and AVG should be removed
- Download the setup file by visiting this link. Upon visiting the link, ensure that the locality isn't selected to any other region apart from worldwide or US. (You can check this with the flag icon displayed at top right corner in the above link - beside login to AVG account).
Thank you and please keep us informed.
AVG appears not to be running on my Macbook Pro. I installed it 10-15-2021, and it worked for a short while, but then would not respond when I tried to start if from the dock or from the Applications folder.
MBP 13", early 2015, Retina
OS 10.13.6
AVG 20.0
Thanks for any help you can give.
Hello Dinesh,
I have already tried restarting. I formerly used Norton Security, but uninstalled it last month. I have no other security software installed.
Activity Monitor shows some AVG activity.

AVG appears to be working properly since the restart. Virus definitions are "up to date." If there is another problem, I will report it here. Thanks very much for your help.

Because I can't uninstall AVG Anti-virus from inside the program, should I uninstall by deleting it from the Applications folder?
Glad to know that, James. Thank you for updating the status. Have a great day. Stay safe!
