The problem is that in my version of AVG Internet Security 2017 there is no option for manual updates as it was in earlier versions of software.

My AVG Ultimate virus definitions have not updated since December 4th (it is now December 6th).  I am not getting any error messages whatsoever - the program just seems to think there are no new definitions.

  • I am using Windows 8.1
  • AVG Internet Security software version:  17.8.3036
  • Virus definitions version 171204-2

I haven't had any new software installed on my computer since December 4th and no known computer or AVG configuration changes.

I should note that I have just completed a repair of AVG and the issue with no new updates still persists.

What should I do since a repair of AVG hasn't solved the problem?

Also, the AVG icon has been missing from the bottom right of my Windows 8.1 screen for months.  I change the setting each and every day to 'show icon and notifications'; however, the icon reverts to 'only show notifications' the next time I restart my computer.  I have seen a previous post where someone was advised it could be fixed by repairing AVG, but I have just done this and this problem (and the no new definition update) problems persist.

Can you let me know how to fix this?

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern.
I would like to inform you that your AVG program will automatically update. The updates might not be released always and is a Normal behavior. Once a new virus definition released it will automatically be updated on your computer.

While I do find it difficult to believe there haven't been any updates for the past few days, I (like Dave) am pleased to say that I have now had my definitions updated to 07-12-17. 

However, I am still wondering how to fix the issue with the AVG icon continualy resetting to 'Only show notifications' in the bottom-right area of my Windows 8.1 screen.  I change it back to 'Show icon and notifications' each and every day, but it reverts back to 'Only show notifications' every time I restart my computer.  As I have previously indicated, a previous solution in this forum said to repair AVG to fix the problem, but I have done that and the icon issue persists.

Yes, I do understand that.  However, I have been using AVG for about 10 years and have never before noticed a period of time where there have been no updates for TWO FULL DAYS.  I can see no new definitions being released for 24 hours, but surely there must have been new protection added in the past TWO days. 

Maybe someone can post to let me know if AVG has released any new virus definitions since December 4th?

Also, as for my other question with the AVG icon continualy disappearing from the notification area at the bottom-right of my Windows 8.1 screen - do you know any way to fix this (I have already tried a repair).

I downloaded the lastest difinition file (.bin) then found the latest version of Internet Security has NOT got the option to update from a .bin file. I've just finished chatting online with an AVG person, & as has happend too many times in the past, they want to uninstall & reinstall the app. This time I said NO, and mentioned that some one else on this forum has the same updating problem, so reinstalling isn't going to solve anything. So we'll just have to sit & wait to see what happens. AVG software is good when working, but when it stops I keep thinking maybe I should go elsewhere!
