I downloaded the latest version and went through the install process which I guess amounts to the same thing as running the repair (which I did not know existed or would have tried it)and this seems to have fixed it so thanks for the advice.

Hi all
I keep getting a message in windows 10 security centre saying avg is out of date and asking me to allow an update in the normal way with everything green in avg.
When I allow the update I get the message
"Windows cannot access the device path or file, you might not have the right permissions to access the item"
So it doesn't update.
Anyway to check I go into avg and hit the definitions update (that circular arrow thing) and it says "Engine and definitions : Already up to date (Current Version 170430-0)
Total time :              0s
Download Time :     1s
Downloaded Files : 4(3.88KB)
Server :                    Download v6834318 AVAST9 Server
                                  http://v6834318.vpsnitro.u.avast.com/vpsnitro
But then I noticed in the section marked PROGRAM in the updates tab says
Current Version : 17.3.3011 (build 17.3.3443.0)
Release date : 30/3/2017 11:54:28
a new version of the programme (17.3.2291) is available
Release date 30/3/2017 11:59:59

But when I hit the update button it says already up to date, round in a circle. I've noticed the number of the claimed update is in fact lower than the current version (current 17.3.3011, proposed 17.3.2291)
and also the odd time (11:59:59) Can anyone explain what's going on and/or what I should do (delete and re install springs to mind) and is my system compromised.
Thanks for your time.

I added them as instructed but I can't see them, no idea what I did wrong. It just says - User-added image for each one.
