In answer to Vishnu Vardan's questions, I have run defrag many times before - this is an old computer. The hard disk is about 150 GB, partitioned into 137 GB for the main disk C and 11 GB for a backup disk. There is space left on both partitions.

As mentioned previously, when I run Maintainence as a part of AVG PC Tunup, the defragmentation "fix" never finishes and eventually has to be cancelled. It was suggested before that I go into settings, 1 Click maintenance and change the defragmentation setting to "fast defrag". This sounded sensible, so I did this and tried again. No improvement, so I re-booted the computer and tried again. After 1.5 hours the defrag feature was still not finished, so I would welcome other suggestions!

That works, although it did not recommend defragmenting as it was only slightly fragmented.
