I logged onto the AVG web site and found a telephone number to ring. I am sorry but I did not make a note of it and cannot remember it.
Current status of pc.
I disconnected the machine from the internet. Today I tried a system restore dating from the beginning of February, when all was well. This completed but said that a number of files had been re-named. These appeared to be avg files and AVG was still stating that it was out of subscription and was not protected. I undid the restore.
I have not tried uninstalling AVG and re-installing it
What I am concerned about is how something has got past AVG firewall and anti-everthing, and what is lurking in some corner of the system. The machine is not networked, so at least the problem is contained, but should I risk sending any email from it?
Yesterday I switched on and was told that my subscription had expired and I no longer had protection. This is not so, as I have AVG Pro and all up to date.
I contacted AVG by 'phone, my machine was remotely checked out and I was told that errors on my machine had allowed a hacker in and AVG has been trashed.
I was offered a remote cure of the errors at a cost of £100.
I replied that I had paid AVG for full protection and this it has failed to do.
I tried system restore, which sort of worked, in that, not surprisingly, AVG was still trashed.
I have disconnected the machine from the Internet and am using it as a typewriter. I am not sure whether it is worth trying to repair it.
I have since found out that my husband had had odd behaviour from the machine, but he had not told me, so I am not sure when this hacking happened
