Carol,
Sorry for the confusion, go to control panel -> programs and features -> uninstall -> check if you have two AVG icons named AVG Protection or Internet Security. Could you share the screenshot https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlName=How-to-create-a-screenshot&supportType=home of your control panel to check and assist you further?
Updated AVG on 9 January 2018. Now appear to have two AVG installations that are the same. When I try to uninstall installation dated 10 May 2017 I am advised I have to uninstall AVG Protection which I knew nothing about. It does not show up in my progammes but I can see it in my Downloads. Any explanation please.
Hello Carol,
Thank you for the information. In this case, I request you to use AVG Clear tool as instructed here and after the computer reboot, you can follow the instruction to download/install AVG Free Antivirus.
Best regards,
Alok.

Yes, there were 2 icons - one was just AVG the was AVG Antivirus. I deleted AVG Protection and then used the AVG Removal tool to uninstall. The AVG icon was gone, but not the other one. But when I tried to uninstall it, came up with error messages so again tried the AVG Removal Tool to be advised that there was no AVG installed on my computer!! Well, in the end I downloaded AVG again. There is only one icon and it APPEARS to be working as it prevented me from getting into a scammy site on Facebook. However my computer is now very slow. I am hoping everything is now OK. PS. I updated because I was considering an UPGRADE. Not too sure about that now.
