Hello Judy,
I really appreciate your effort in resolving this issue. I have forwarded this case to our senior team. We will contact you once we receive a reply or in need or more information.
Best regards,
Alok.

I have the free version of AVG for my Macbook Pro.  I've been using the free version of AVG antivirus and have been very happy with it.  It updated a couple of times recently and yesterday when I tried to scan my computer, AVG opened already saying '43% of the scan completed' and did nothing else.  It was as if it had frozen at 43%, except for the fact that it hadn't actually started at zero.

I've read through some answers I found on the support forum to do with AVG freezing during the scan, and following the instructions found there, I uninstalled AVG (choosing 'uninstall' from the AVG menu) and re-installed it after rebooting my computer.  The newly installed AVG behaved in exactly the same way.  Is this a known problem?  How do I deal with it, please?

Judy,
In general an anti virus scan will require majority of your system resources and it may run slow depending upon other applications running along. It also depends upon the no.of files it is analyzing. Please wait for the scan to finish and share the requested information to assist you further. We look forward to help you.

Hi Aloki -

Well, the scan was still running this morning (very, very slowly) and still showing 99%, so I cancelled it, closed down Time Machine and started the scan again.  I left it open and running while I went out for an hour and a half and when I came back it was finished and showing no threats.

My techie husband says that it had probably formed a symlink with Time Machine and that you would know what that meant!

Thanks for your help.  I hope this information helps you to help others if it happens to anyone else.

Judy

OK, it's now been over 30 hours since I started this scan and it's still going.  It's reached 99%, but has been at that number for several hours now.  What I have noticed is that it is scanning our Time Machine, which it is NOT set to do in the preferences.  My husband (who was a programming team leader at a software house so is quite computer-savvy) is suggesting that this is a bug and it is happening because the scan happened to coincide with a timed back-up to Time Machine. Now it is begun, the connection has not been severed and it is running through terabytes of stored information.  How long this is going to take is anyone's guess.  I have left the computer turned on and plugged in since the scan began and it has been running continuously.User-added image

Thanks, Alan Binch.  Will do.

Hi Abirami Shanmugam -

Since posting this question I have downloaded Clean Your Mac and have run it.  I then restarted the scan at about 10am and it is still running, albeit as slow as ditchwater.  I'll wait until it's finished, and then run it again, at which point it should probably be quicker.  If there is still a problem, I'll post a screenshot.   Should it really take over four hours to run the scan?  It never has before.

Hello Judy,
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with AVG Scan on your mac computer. The first scan might take 2- 4 hours to finish their whole computer scan (but it should not take more then 30 hours). In this case, I request you to reinstall AVG Antivirus program on your Mac computer. Please follow the instruction (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG-AntiVirus-for-Mac) to uninstall  AVG Antivirus, reboot  your computer once, after reboot please follow the instruction (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-download-and-install-AVG-AntiVirus-for-Mac) to download/install AVG Antivirus and start a whole computer scan with the fresh installed AVG Antivirus.
Best regards,
Alok.

Hi Alok - Thanks for the reply.

I had literally only just done that.  I uninstalled AVG for Mac using the AVG menu 'uninstall' option and followed the instructions, then rebooted my computer.  I did one scan after that, which again stuck t 43% with no apparent activity for a very long time, so i installed and ran Clean Your Mac and this scan that's running now was the first one I tried after reinstalling AVG for Mac and Clean Your Mac.  I did both of those things because the scan was sticking at 43%.  Well, it's sticking at 99% now!

As I said, I believe this is because it is running through the terabytes of data on our Time Machine which holds umpteem back-ups of two whole computers.  It should not have done this, because the option to access and scan external hard drives etc was turned off.  We believe it did so because Time Machine did a back-up (automatic) while AVG was scanning, and it failed to disconnect.  Since it is still finding 'threats' I'm reluctant to cancel the scan, especially since it took so long to get to this point, so my plan is to let it continue overnight and see where we are in the morning.  If it is still stuck, I'll temporarily disable Time Machine and run the scan again to see if it does the same again.

My question now is this:  is this a known problem with AVG when using Time Machine set to back up automatically?  If so, I might have to disable it each time I scan, which is a pain.

Thanks, Alan Binch.  Will do.
