May I ask whether you tried to boot your PC into safe mode?
If not, please try the steps as mentioned in this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=AVG-Restart-Windows-Safe-Mode) and inform whether you are able to get into safe mode.
Have you tried windows repair using your operating system disk?

After running AVG TuneUp 2017 it stated that the C: drive hadn't been scanned in over 3 months and therefore I started a deep scan. It stuck at 11% for an hour or two then when I came back to look at it the screen was back to windows 10 homepage. Thought no more of it except that a notice came stating AVG required a restart, I presumed this was after an AVG IS 2017 update. My laptop restarted but it ran into startup problems and after "Diagnosing your PC" appeared on the screen it continued into a restart and diagnosing loop each time with the option to enter into various Troubleshooting modes or reset the PC. After going through this several times I opted to Reset the PC but to keep my files but again it just reverted back into the bootup loop. I tried inserting the Windows 10 backup DVD but it did not recognise the optical drive. I managed to get into the command prompt window but all that was listed was X Drive and no others not even C: It also said there was no other drives present and that the system resources were too low. There was an option to restart in Safe Mode only, plus with Command Prompt and then with Networking. I tried each but my PC won't even bootup into Safe Mode just the same diagnostic blue screen loop.

At this rate I can't even reformat the Hard drive which is the last resort I want for losing my files although I have a backup that's a few weeks old.

Does anyone have any suggestions or can help please?

Thanks,
Pete

Peter, please visit https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Troubleshoot-AVG-PC-TuneUp and try the steps provided under "What can I do if a disk check stops mid-progress?".

If the issue persists, go to Advanced Options and try to restore the PC settings to an earlier date.

Thanks for the advice but as said before all that displays is "Preparing Automatic Repair" then "Diagnosing your PC" then the options which I can't get to work not even booting into Safe Mode. I managed to get into Command Prompt which displayed drive X, I typed cd/ enter and then cd/C and there was no C drive was displayed it's as though there is no hard drive which the laptop recognises. It also doesn't recognise the optical drive. I need some urgent help to recover the hard drive

Peter,

We appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.

To assist you further, we recommend you to contact the local technician or system manufacturer where they will help you to fix this for you.

Hi,

I've managed to get into the command prompt window and this shows  x:\windows\system32>
It will not take the entry C: and doing a dir/w there is no C: drive present. Then I went into Diskpart typed sel disk 0 and disk 0 is now the selected disk. Then I typed Diskpart >sel disk 0 >list volume this listed all the volumes on the hard disk and thankfully it all appears to be there it's just access or fixing the boot process. I noticed there was no C drive but there was a drive listed as RAW which had a 449GB healthy partition which I guess is the old C drive.
The list contains;
Volume 0 Drive Letter D Labelled DVD (but still can't access it)
Volume 1 No Drive Letter Labeled Recovery NTFS 600MB Healthy
Volume 2 Had No Drive Letter Labelled RAW now C (which I assigned the drive letter by typing sel vol <2> assign letter=C: then exit) 449GB Healthy
Volume 3 Drive Letter E Push Button NTFS 15GB Healthy
Volume 4 No Drive Letter Labelled ESP FAT32 Healthy Hidden

Volume 4 contains a directory called BCD which I cannot access so I assigned letter F to this drive to get into the EFI directory and then Microsoftto try and run bootrec /Fixboot but Access Was Denied

That's where I'm currently at so any assistance as to how I can get the boot fixed from here would be grateful.

Thanks
