AVG Secure VPN - Problem with Sending / Receiving Emails

I had a play around with some of the suggestions but nothing I changed worked, and I then spent a lot of time having to refigure the email address accounts in Thunderbird so that they even worked with VPN off. Will have another look when I can spare enough time.

I can't send or receive emails (I use Mozilla Thunderbird with Windows 10) when AVG Secure VPN is turned on. I Googled this problem several months ago and thought I'd found an answer and then put it on the backburner until I had spare time, but now I can't find it.

Reason and solution please?
