AVG service keeps crashing

I keep getting an error with AVG that inhibits all Internet and network connections.  When I open AVG it gives me an error screen "UI Failed to load. - This is really embarrassing. - AV service is not responding."  When I click on the RESTART SERVICE button, after a few seconds everything is restored.  It only takes a couple hours of computer idle to see the error occur.  I have the AVG AntiVirus Free software, verson 17.5.3022.  My operating system is Windows XP.  Has anyone else seen this problem?
