Hello Andrew,
The methods used by the shredder are described in the PCT manual in section "3.8.5.2. Deletion Methods" http://files-download.avg.com/doc/AVG_Performance/avg_gse_uma_en_ltst_40.pdf.
Number of repetitions means how many times the whole deletion process will run… Higher the number the longer time to complete but also lower chance of recovering the original content. Please feel free to contact us for further assistance.
I noticed that they conveniently ignored your question about delete allocated free space. It seems to default to that. I deleted about 100 GB of files with that selected, and now there are no files but the 100 GB of space is not available. Anyone else have that happen? How to fix?
Hello,
I've recently upgraded to AVG Ultimate and there are now new options for the AVG Shredder. I don't know what they mean or do. Help would be greatly appreciated.
Fast delete vs Gutmann method vs DOD 5220.22
What are the differences between each, and is there a "best" method?
What does increasing/decreasing number of repetitions do?
What happens if I choose to delete allocated disk free space when I shred a file? This does not permanently delete space off my hard drive, does it?
Hello Bill,
If the deletion is done with the check box enabled saying "Delete allocated free space" then the process will delete the files from it and that particular space will not be able to use by any other files.
In-case, if the user wish to use that space, then it is recommended to disable the "Delete allocated free space" option and then proceed with the deletion.
Thank you.
