In general, the performance depends on many factors (OS type and version, HareWare configuration, other running applications, virus scan in progress etc.). Please check and remove if you have any conflicting antivirus applications installed on your PC. Also I recommend you to optimize your PC, please refer this article to boost up your PC using AVG TuneUp.
Please share the screenshot of your CPU usage in your task manger.
If you don't mind let us know how do you narrow it to AVG, so that will be helpful to understand the situation and provide you an appropriate solution on that.
Regarding your Microsoft edge issue :
Do you get any error message when you try to open the Edge browser? If yes, please share the screenshot of the error message. Then, disable the AVG temporarily and check if you are able to open the Edge browser,
Also check if the browser is out to sleep in the AVG TuneUp.
Go to AVG TuneUp >> Speed Up >> Background & startup programs.
Check the list of applications that are put to sleep.

i currently have installed AVG protection and AVG tune up. Tune up is slowing my laptop to a crawl, sometimes it can take upto 15 minutes to go from switch on from sleep to being able to open anything, its also messing with microsoft edge which is shutting down at times. i decided to purchase AVG tuneup to clear out some of the crap and speed things up a little bit but since installation i have had constant problems with a now very very slow laptop.HELP.
