AVG stopped working won't re-install

My AVG antivirus stopped working. Tray icon gone won't open from shortcut or programs. Tried to download and install but installation fails. Windows security center says AVG is up to date and working. Have run AVG removal tool with no help. System is Win XP.

Yes, my processor supports SSE2 and Win XP is SP3 32 bit. I think the problem is that Security center shows that AVG is up to date and working, so either Security center has some sort of fault or AVG has not been removed completely and is still telling security center that it is working.
