AVG tray icon showing red cross, but I'm protected?

Well, at the moment, it tells me with the red cross in the icon that it's not working, and yet it also tells me I'm fully protected. So, until you fix it, I'd rather not be confused LOL

It's back!! I just rebooted to apply a Windows 7 update, and the AVG icon has a cross through it, with the program telling me I'm protected. PLEASE can someone tell me how to fix this? I'm getting bored with this error now…

I too found the red "x" on my tray icon today … I have a paid AVG account, runing Windows X, and scan done today, all updates installed, all features in the green – EXCEPT THE RED X

Hello Stephen,

Thank you for updating the status.
Yes, at times the windows update will have the workaround as the programs are installed in their platforms.
We request you to keep checking the status with AVG and if it happens again, do report it to us immediately.

Our pleasure, Stephen. We appreciate your efforts. Have a great day!

Stephen, it is actually not recommended to disable system tray notifications of AVG Antivirus as it would give you important information.

Well, after a few weeks of AVG behaving itself, and surviving several reboots, this morning AVG updated and forced my laptop to reboot - this time, the darn red cross reappeared! AVG, please can you stop mucking around and just fix your program??

I have AVG Free, and used for years with no issues. However, now the tray icon has a red cross through it, but the program states, 'I am protected', and my virus definitions and program are all up to date. How do I get rid of the red cross?

Just to update - I have now completed the diagnostic program as requested by AVG and forwarded the results. Am now just awaiting their response… (Nice to know I'm not the only one with this issue)

"I am running Window 7 home premium", inrteresting we are running the same OS. Wouoldn't surprise me if a recent MS update has screwed things up. They constantly apply updates which screw current working things into being non operational! Temprarily, I have disabled AVG notifications in that the tray icon is no longer visible, what I can't see doesn't bug me LOL

Well, after almost 5 hours since reinstall, it all seems to work just as it should. If the fault re occurs, I'll update this thread…

Just to confirm, the fault still persists! Gonna hide tray icon again as it just irritates me everytime I glance down at it…

Stephen,
Sorry to hear that the issue persists.
Let us know the version of AVG you have installed and share the screenshot of AVG user interface to look into it.
Open AVG Antivirus Free -> Menu -> About -> check its version.

As requested…
AVG version

A reboot did nothing, the 'fault' persisited. So, I went old school. Removed AVG using the uninstall function, and reinstalled a fresh version. All appears to be OK now, though it's only been an hour! So never fully got behind why it happened in the first place, and shame it couldn't be 'fixed', but at least for now, all seems OK.
