AVG Guru
I still cannot get a working install either using Zen or directly downloading the installer. I have discover that the firewall is set to start automatically but won't run. If I try to start it from the "devices" panel, I get a messages that actually says it tries to start but immediately shut down and saying that "the device" may have been stopped without having been "unregistered." i have tried various registry cleaning products without success.
So . . . Anyone have any suggestions as to what to try next?
BTW, I also have AVG Ultimate installed on a machine running Windows XP Pro SP3 without these problems.
Hello Ralph,
I'm sorry to hear about this. Please be informed that, AVG needs 2 GB free space on the hard disk to get it installed with out any problem. Regarding AVG Firewall issue, please let us know if you're using Windows XP Home (Service Pack 3) operating system (Right click on My Computer and select properties), you can also check AVG system requirements and supported operating systems here (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=What-are-AVG-system-requirements-and-supported-opearting-systems). If you have Windows XP Home (Service pack 3), operating system running on your computer, then AVG Firewall should work properly.(1/2)
That is ok (I can understand about spelling "auto-correct"). Yes, I request you to reinstall AVG Internet Security - Unlimited on your computer at first (you can install AVG Tuneup - Unlimited later) by removing AVG completely along with any previous traces using the AVG clear tool/AVG Remover tool (I understand you have already used CC Cleaner to clean the registry). This will ensure that none of the previous traces of AVG are left on your computer and you have an updated version. Please follow the below instruction, next time when you will have time to go though AVG reinstallation process. (1/2)
Aloe,
Yes, the problem machine is running Windows XP Home SP3 - sorry, I edited that out when I cut the length of what I was about to post. I know Ultimate's firewall SHOULD run on this but the fact is, it does not.
I cannot provide a screenshot at this time since, even with a non-functional installation of Ultimate, the random reboots returned so I uninstalled it AGAIN using control panel (which evokes the AVG repair/uninstall function) and then used CC Cleaner to clean the registry AGAIN. There were 8 or 10 broken registry items that were removed.
For the time being, I have re activated the built-in Windows firewall. Other than that, there has been no third-party AV software on this machine in many years - since I replaced the hard drive. I am a long-time AVG user. The next time I have the time to go through another install/uninstall/clean cycle, I will try to get a screencapture of the AVG UI - is there a particular panel you are interested in or just what ever opens up first?
Please check if you have installed any third party security/firewall program on your Windows XP Home computer and also share a screenshot of the AVG User Interface to assist you further. You can check the following link to see the instructions about taking the screenshot (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-create-a-screenshot).
Best regards,
Alok.(2/2)
