On starting the PC for today (and before receiving the last reply here), everything was slow again, then the AVG icon appeared on the system tray with the exclamation symbol on top of it as before. On selecting it I discovered the same AVG display as we started with, showing the computer not protected and hacker attacks not protected. As the repair function had been completed I have to understand a virus or malwear (or whatever it should be called) jumped over all the AVG protection and acted to cause this. It appears to have re-installed itself. That should have been caught by AVG and quarantined in the beginning. The AVG program has reported "You are fully protected" when that was not happening. This needs additional attention as the process we went through above did not change anything. Also some of the program icons on the desktop were changed from the normal icon to the icon of a different program.
I have also saved the URL for these messages to return to them later to read the replies and try to proceed on. When continuing we find the saved URL does not work and sends us elsewhere. I have to search for the exchange of messages again. What should I be saving as a favorite to return to these messages?
I have AVG Ultimate (paid version) running under Windows 7. When Windows starts there is now a delay followed by the AVG symbol in the bottom tray with an exclamation symbol over it. Selecting it results in an AVG page with the error messages "Protection is disabled. Protection will be automatically enabled after PC restart" along with "Computer not protected" and "Hacker attacks not protected." Selecting "Fix now" results in everything on this page changing to green and the message "You are fully protected." (Restarting the PC as called for results in the same as before with the same error messages.) Windows 7 has been updated as directed. I looked to see if there was any other anti-virus or similar program on the system. I found an installation of Adaware Web Companion, which I removed. The PC has been re-started. The results are the same. Any time the PC has a new start the above repeats. I need this to work normally as it did before.
Tom, Yes, it's a free remote service. Please get connected with our remote technicians where they will check and resolve all the issues related to AVG.
Thank you for the information. It looks like we have to check the version of AVG installed and whether there are old traces present on your computer. Also, the reason for the desktop icon to get changed. Hence, to fix all of these, we request you get connected with our additional support for which an email instruction has been sent.
If this is an offer for free remote assistance I will cooperate with it. The current AVG Ultimate product I purchased is not expired, but I have lost time with it because of what behaves like a virus that jumped over all the AVG protections that were paid.
I should add I perfomed a "deep scan" of everything on the system using updated AVG definitions. The program found one entry from an old stored item that had been scanned before with no report in the past. This was reported to be quarantined. But doing that did not bring me any different result than what you see above.
I should also add that some of the desktop icons where the graphics changed involve the AVG icon. In other words the AVG icon is shown along with the name of an unrelated, installed program or link. Selecting it reaches the item in the text shown below the icon.
I have used AVG for over 5 years without any difficulty like this.
The AVG icon shows on the "System Tray" I do not see "AVG Firewall" confirmed as being on or off. I understand there is one as well as a Microsoft Firewall. I am not advised about whether either one may be on or off. It just says "You are fully protected." The settings on the AVG program show an "Enhanced Firewall" is selected. I am not advised if there is a Firewall other than, or in addition to, this "Enhanced Firewall" The AVG programs are no longer showing "unprotected"
It seems that the AVG service is taking little longer to load on your computer and that is the reason why it shows unprotected when you open AVG application immediately after restart.
We request you to wait till the AVG icon shows on the "System Tray" and check if AVG firewall shows as active.
This now appears to work in part. After running the recommended repair, AVG Ultimate appeared to work OK, except that it is slow to start after the computer is started. I come to expect the AVG icon to appear in the bottom tray. It does but there is much delay first before the icon is shown. Meanwhile other icons on the desktop do not respond. There was no exclamation point symbol over this AVG icon. On viewing the AVG page the first time the PC was re-started there were no errors shown. The second time it was re-started the "Hacker Attacks" function shown on the screen was turned off. Program icons on the desktop do not work until the AVG icon appears in the bottom tray. Then they do operate. So at this point I have to say it is partially repaired and needs additional attention. Thank you.
