AVG Update Failed

Hello Kristina,
We understand how something like this can really try your patience. We apologize for the inconvenience caused.
To get your issue fixed, we request you run AVG remover tool and then install AVG Antivirus free in your pc.
To run AVG remover tool follow the below steps :
Please click on the below link to download remover tool

Accept the license agreement and then choose AVG Product and remove it.

I have been using AVG Free for years with never any issues. Now it tells me the update failed.
One of the error codes was OxC00700C1.
I have tried through advanced options to delete the temporary update files - but get "an error occurred when saving the configuration %1 is not valid win32 application".
I have used AVG remover to uninstall and then re-downloaded and re-installed the software and it's still not updating. Now AVG updating definitions just keeps spinning.
Please help.

But I thank you for your prompt response.
Just to clarify - I have tried multiple times using the removal tool, deleting the removal tool folder and re-installing from the links you suggested, as I researched this prior to my initial post.
I have resorted to resetting my computer back to factory settings and using Windows Defender for Win 10. In the meantime I decided to open another computer with win 7only to have the same problem with this computer. I have removed AVG from this computer also but it seems the update has created problems in the system files, so it looks
like I will have to reset this computer as well.
Any other suggestions?

Kristina, Also please note that with Win10 Windows Defender is classified as an AntiVirus prog which can conflict with AVG.
