AVG update not working - CAUSED HEAPS OF PROBLEMS

Right - five hundred years later - I have

  1. run AVG Clear,
  2. and the Remover tools
  3. and re installed AVG Anti Virus Free
Now I have a different icon, like an amoeba.
I can't understand the privacy policy ...........it is more than 60 pages! and a maze of other links - I am not a techy.
  • I found the Menu at top RHS, and Settings on RHS, and Components on LHS.   I don't know what sliders to alter and my head is bursting with all this jargon that might as well be in double Dutch.
  • What is this "unwrap it" gift??  There is no info and I don't want strange things in my computer - it already opened some strange-looking tab with blue flowers - and the name of my computer in the top LHS under the address line!!!
  • It says "you are protected" yet there was a window that said to turn on Windows Defender or Avast as if nothing is on - yet that has now gone.
  • and one of your links went to "Congratulations You've reached the end of the internet!" but I didn't find a restaurant there, nor Zaphod Beeblebrox.
  • The Avast amoeba said "Turn on Avast Antivirus. Avast Antivirus is turned off. Click to turn on" - but the message disappeared and when I clicked on the amoeba - there doesn't seem to be an on/off and it says "you are protected".
  • From my Start button - "Avast Free Antivirus", and "All Programs", are now highlighted in pink - what is this all about?

Hello, H Mccord.
We regret for the inconvenience caused. Please let us know if it is a free or paid version of AVG that is installed on your PC. Open AVG dashboard and share a screenshot (http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot) of it. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions. It could be possible that traces from older version of AVG are still present on your PC.

OK - checking why this has gone wrong - seems I was given instructions -

"Then, refer to instructions in the link below to download and install AVG Anti Virus free:
http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Install-Free-Antivirus.
After re installing AVG free, click the link below for instructions to manage AVG email signature settings:  "

This went to -
User-added image

and I didn't notice that I had been re-directed to download Avast for some reason
- I was just following the instructions to "...download and install AVG Anti Virus free:"
....and "After re installing AVG free,...."

Is it any wonder I am confused.

AVG shows red - needing update.  After clicking on Update Now - pop-up says "Update completed successfully" - BUT it still shows the same red - needing update.   Clicking on Fix Now - does exactly the same.  Tried many times - never updated and took off the red.
I have downloaded a new version of AVG and uninstalled the original from 2015.  SAME PROBLEM.

On top of that -

  1. AVG has LOCKED MY FOLDERS "for editing by unknown user"
  2. AVG denies access to download pics from camera "you do not have access privileges"
  3. AVG has added AVG "signature" to my emails
  4. now says "you have 4 privacy issues" - no idea what that is - but it only has button marked RESOLVE - so I have closed the window as I have no idea that the issues are - what AVG will do - what more problems AVG will cause.
  5. AVG was working fine until this latest demand for updating -and has gone completely mad since!!! blocking my access to my own stuff !!!!!
Can anyone tell me how to fix this - or do I have to throw away the computer now!!!!!!!!!!

"…remove all the Avast traces completely from your computer."
Do I just DELETE whatever items are there?   Why has the Remover not removed them??

Program files (x86) only shows AVG
Program files shows Avast Software folder and millions of things inside that
I don't have Programdata
I don't have appdata\local under users or appdata anything

What should I do??

They're blackmailing us to using an AVG with a new U.I. as I've stated previously.

It has all been rebooted as prompted, so a few times, I didn't count.
Now - as there was also a prompt for a Google Toolbar, I agreed to that BUT there is no additional toolbar so I right clicked on the current one - which said "open all (85)" never seen before, so I clicked on that - and it has opened millions of tabs [probably 85] - some I have never seen before [eg contactless bus payments!], some news item from 2015, the Router page from an old router years ago, and a couple of gardening YouTube items which are still talking!!  Looks like another 5 days of trying to sort it out.  How on earth are these here, and even if they were sitting there invisibly all this time, how have the reboots not cancelled them???

We apologize for the inconvenience caused, we request you to run the Avast clear tool to remove the traces of Avast using this link (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe) and the restart your PC.

Then check if AVG Antivirus free program still shows in passive mode. If it still stays in passive mode, then click on "Fix now" to get the program back to normal mode.

They're blackmailing us to using an AVG with a new U.I. as I've stated previously.

Now I have downloaded AVG free -
Start button showed AVG and All Programs highlighted in pink [as shown earlier]
AVG shows "you're protected" with a tick
BUT also shows "AVG is now in PASSIVE mode Avast antivirus is running on your PC"
- whatever is passive mode?
- why is it saying Avast is still on here???  - it is not showing in control panel or anywhere???

What has happened now???

@H Mccord, you can find Menu option on the dashboard of latest version AVG.

@Bruce, please note that it is always recommended to use latest version of AVG to enjoy new protection features.

Thanks but where is Menu??

As you say, it seems I have downloaded Avast rather than AVG - I just followed the links and didn't notice that - as AVG caused all the problems in the first place and you are apparently the same company, perhaps you can tell me what the difference is and should I have AVG or Avast?

H McCord,
Yes, we are the same company but the support and services are separate for both. I would recommend to use AVG Antivirus free for your computer protection.
You can go to control panel > program and features > look for Avast Antivirus and uninstall it. After that, you can click here for the instruction to download/install AVG Antivirus Free.
Regards,
Alok.

H McCord,
We had provided the wrong link (Avast Antivirus Free link) to install AVG Antivirus Free at first by mistake, please accept our apologies for that.
Regards,
Alok.

Signature AVG now put on my emails
Here is the 'signature' that AVG is now putting on all my emails!!!  How do I remove this???

Apology accepted but my questions have not been answered -
- why is AVG saying it is in passive mode
- and what is that anyway
- it says the computer and email etc is NOT protected
- why is it saying Avast is still on here
- why is the start button showing it with pink highlight - again

I am 5 days down the track and it is still not OK

H, Avast / AVG… Also just for your info have a look @ this link (https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b0000000LSo8AAG).

Why is AVG in PASSIVE mode and what does that mean??

HOW do I get it back to normal???

Appreciate the details.
To determine which AVG component is blocking access, please disable each AVG component individually and try to access the file for editing. Open AVG, click on Menu > Settings > Components. And use the On/Off slider against each component to disable them.
