Hello Matt.
I realize how testing this situation could be. The rescue cd is the only option to get back to login screen of pc. Since you have already tried the rescue cd to bootable state and still face issue, we believe that there is something wrong with the pc. To be on a safer side to rescue your files again we request you to contact any local technician to diagnose the pc.
Thank you.
I recently had daily popups informing me that I had to restart my computer (Acer Aspire E15) to update my AVG anti-virus software, and when I finally relented and restarted it, it wouldn't turn back on - now every time I try to turn it on, I get a blue screen (windows 8), the computer restarts, and it happens over and over again. And when Windows goes into Automatic Repair Mode, it gets stuck on a black screen.
I looked on here and was directed to a USB Rescue CD/USB, which is what I have been trying to use for the past two hours. I downloaded the .zip file for USB from the AVG downloads section, and installed it on my USB drive (I got the "device is now bootable" message, so it should theoretically be working), but whenever I try to boot my computer from the USB (I changed the BIOS so the USB is top priority) I get a "please insert bootable device" message. It's not recognisable for some reason. I'm not sure how to solve this - I just want to be able to use my computer again (without losing files)!

Thanks Kishore, I appreciate the help.
