AVG update stops speakers working

Update: While waiting for your reply, I was googling this problem. Another webpage instructed going to Task Manager > Services, which I did and discovered my Realtek audio driver was missing. So I went to Dell's support page for my laptop and downloaded the missing driver and got my sound card and sound back. I've conducted their sound tests as well and everything is working fine so far. I'm now going to reinstall AVG and will let you know what happens.

I am puzzled how my sound card driver disappeared off the system. I had watched a YouTube video shortly before stepping away from my laptop, so I know my sound was working fine. When I returned an hour later, it was gone. The only thing that happened in the interim was that AVG update installed itself and rebooted my laptop.

Thank you for the information.

Hello Charles,

We assure you that the issue should be due to some other source.
It should have got fixed when you uninstalled AVG Antivirus free.
Do you have any other AVG program installed?
To check the status of audio driver, press Windows and R keys simultaneously to open RUN window.
In Run window, type as "devmgmt.msc" without the quotes and click on Ok.
In device manage, click on arrow mark available near "Sound" driver and provide the screenshot of it.
You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

I've used the free edition of AVG for years and really like it. This afternoon it automatically downloaded a new update and rebooted my laptop when I had stepped away for an hour. When I returned, I saw notice of the update, but my laptop's speakers had stopped working.

My laptop (Dell XPS 13, Windows 10) has internal speakers (Realtek Audio), but now the laptop was suddenly not recognizing them and believed I only had external speakers. I uninstalled AVG and rebooted my laptop, and still the speakers aren't working.

Can you please help and tell me how I can fix this? Thanks!

We're glad to hear that the issue has been resolved.

We too are not sure about what exactly could have caused the issue because AVG program will not reboot your PC automatically when it installs an update. Please re install AVG Anti Virus and let us know if you experience it again.

You are most welcome and thank you for the screenshot.
Right click on "Intel (R) Display Audio" and click on "properties".
Click on "Driver" tab and check whether you have option to click "Roll Back Driver".
Provide the screenshot of the window after clicking on "properties" too.
Thanks.
