I had this problem too and when I began the process of repairing AVG, I noticed it was showing up twice in Add or Remove Programs.
I uninstalled the oldest one and after a restart, my CPU usage has dropped from 80% to 3% !
Perhaps this can help someone also experiencing high CPU usage

Hi,
I did as you requested. The problem stays the same ! Guess I will have to start looking for an alternative? I hope you people from AVG understand that rendering a PC virtually unusable by claiming almost all its resources is not really a good solution to protect a PC? What is the logic behind this?
I am really disappointed… I liked AVG till now…
Ever since my last update (17.4.3014) AVG is using 75% of my CPU resources. I have used AVG since 2007 without a problem; now in the last few days it has rendered my computer almost unusable. My computer is at 75% usage even when it is just sitting idle, with no browsers or windows open.
I'm guessing I may have the same problem as Joshua Levy above. How do I determine how many versions are running on my computer? And where do I find the removal tools for 2016 and 2017?
I had a couple of problems after AVG Update (17.4.3014), what happened was the older version of AVG was not uninstalled with the update. My CPU usage was constantly around 99% every time i rebooted, disabling and enabling Self Protection was a temp fix. What happened was the older versoin of AVG was not removed with the update, so there were 2 versions of AVG running on my machine. I contacted AVG support who advised me to remove an re-install AVG. I had to download 2 removal tools, one for 2016 and 2017. Since i reinstalled everything runs fine, CPU usage is back to normal.
Swa, I had the same issue. The problem for me was solved by a silly Windows 10 setting. AVG needed a restart to complete some process and until that would happen it ate all my CPU power, similar like yours.
However, Windows 10 uses a 'fast startup' that fakes a restart but actually leaves the computer on. Either use a restart or disable the fast boot in Windows 10 (search for disable fast boot windows 10).
That will force a restart on your computer and kill the high resources. I had to do an AVG repair afterwards. Now my system is back up and running normally.
Hope this helps (probably you already have another anti-virus by now )
Hi,
yes, and I did everything mentioned in that email: the diagnostic information has been sent to you as requested…last week. I did nog get any response or reaction after that … none at all… unbelievable. You really keep people busy … but for what purpose actually? Problem not solved so far…took a lot of my time. Your 'FREE' AVG -version is not free at all if you look at it that way…
Can I still expect some analysis/conclusions based on the diagnostic information that I have sent please??
And then… silence from AVG Technologies … as if I didn't sent any diagnostic information… Nothing… Should I start a new Question??
Hello Nikolay,
I am sorry to hear that AVG services are consuming more CPU usage on your Computer.
Please repair (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG) AVG program once and follow the below steps to fix the issue.
Click on Menu->Settings->Troubleshooting->Uncheck "Enable AVG Self Protection Mode" and check the status.
Please do contact us, If you face any difficulties.
Thank you.
Hello Swa,
We regret for the inconvenience caused.
We have sent you an email with instructions to collect the diagnostic information and analyze this issue.
Please let us know once you have uploaded the info to AVG server.
Thank you.
If that does not work though, disable the "Enable AVG Self protection module" in menu> settings troubleshooting.
Now in the Task Manager, Go to Details Right Click AVGSvc.exe > Set Affinity. Choosing fewer cores will limit AVG with fewer CPU usage.
Now the problem should be fixed. Try undoing the first step to see if it still works.
Kathy, we are glad to know that problem doesn't occur now.
If it happens again, we will be able to collect logs and analyze further to identify the root cause.
Keep us informed about the status.
Hi all, since today i'm experiencing AVGSvc.exe comstantly hitting 12%.
Until yesterday it was more or less at 1%
I'm on Win7 64bit.
Any hint?
thanks
Dmitry's fix worked for me - got rid of AVG's constant 12% added CPU suck on my system. Granted, this is much less than others' reported 40-90% drain, but it makes a difference. Thanks,
Dmitry.
Hi everyone I made an account just to say that I fixed the problem by just stopping a download that was happening in the background (for me it's epic games downloading RDR2). I tried to add epic games to the exempt list but this didn't work sadly but now you know what's been causing the problem. Like so other people can see
Hello AVG Support - I am experiencing the same problem with AVGUI.exe maxing out my CPU utilization on Task Manager. I'm running AVG Internet Security (paid version) on Windows XP desktop machine.
> I followed the above link to AVG repair, ran it and nothing changed - AVGUI.exe still between 84 - 98 % CPU still at !00%
> I Opened AAVG Internet Security > menu > settings > troubleshooting > uncheck "Enable AVG Self protection module" > click OK. Then opened Task manager and the CPU usage was still maxed out.
This is a recent occurance. Any suggesions as to how to resolve this issue? Not loving AVG at the moment. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
I found out how to Reduce the CPU Usage, although to be fair it requires a more hands on approach to stay protected…
I Disabled it within the Startup Folder…
THEN I disabled It In msConfig.exe…
And, THEN I Disabled "Self Protection" in AVG Setting…
THEN I Disabled it on Startup in the Task Manager Folder…
This allows you to Game Single Player games, or in High Security Multiplayer Games with Little AVG CPU Usage…
BUT
I will have to let you know, to NOT forget to Re-Enable it when you go back into Google Chrome. If you forget to Re-Enable it Windows Microsoft Virus Defender causes Google Chrome CPU Usage to all of a sudden become the Problem, furthermore you lack protection…
Soooo, You kinda have to be hands on with when to start it up or not TBH XD. I prefer it to 2 FPS games though honestly!
