I suggest you to try connecting to different location in AVG Secure VPN and check if you experience the same.
Also, disable enhanced firewall in AVG Internet Security and disable AVG Secure VPN to check which program causes the issue.

Something happened in the last week or so, when I activate the VPN I can't connect to the internet. When I turn it off, connection works fine. What happened?
