When I try to toggle the on button for VPN, a box comes on the screen saying I need a license and offers a free trial or a monthly sum.  But I have a current subscription with over 500 days left.

It could be possible that you have not activated the paid subscription yet. Please click this link for instructions to activate AVG Secure VPN and let us know if the issue persists.

Open AVG Secure VPN installed on your computer and check if it shows the correct subscription.

If yes, it means that everything is fine on your computer.

Thanks, I logged in again as per the link.  Got to the same screen for toggling on and off and it worked, but subscriptions showed again, I hadn't ever logged out though, puzzling…
