Hello Banjo,
We're sorry to hear this.
As you know, you may experience a slower internet connection when using AVG Secure VPN. This is because a VPN encrypts traffic and data before sending it to a server. Depending on the distance and capacity of the server, this process may cause a slightly slower, but safer, internet connection.
We've sent you an email regarding your refund request. Please check for the email and revert to us.
Thank you.
I am having issues with AVG VPN. I currently have a 500Mbps+ connection with Virgin Media in the UK. I was initially disappointed with the speeds I was getting (on average around 50 - 60Mbps) and was originally going to fire off an email to VM complaining about the poor speed for what I was paying for. However, I thought I would try closing down on my AVG VPN and give it a couple of tests. The result? BANG! Straight up to speeds in excess of 500Mbps. I understand that going through a VPN reduces broadband speed by around 10 percent, but over TEN TIMES SLOWER?
And yes, my tests were carried out using different VPN servers at other locations. I'm looking for a cancellation and refund if this cannot be sorted out.
I tried it again this morning and got a miserable 49.4Mbps download through the VPN and 553.3Mbps without the VPN. Upload speeds are around 37Mbps in both cases.
Come on guys, you can do better than a copy/paste from a knowledgebase. I've been in the Telecoms industry for 40 years now and know exactly how VPNs work. Yes, there are overheads associated with tunneling through a VPN but not to the extent that it throttles my speed back to 10% of what it should be. Your refusal of a refund doesn't surprise me. What I want is for someone in your technical department to look at this issue and explain just what the heck is going on. I'm not paying money to my ISP for superfast broadband, only to have AVG screw it up by deploying a sub-standard VPN. When the time comes to renew I will be sorely tempted to go for a grown-up product that delivers the goods. I would be interested to hear what your techies have to say about the reason(s) for the speed deficiency through the VPN, and not just the usual Customer Service fob-off.
P.S. It's 14:35 local time in the UK, and my non-VPN speed is 593Mbps. Going through AVG VPN it's 76Mbps.
