Hello Larry,
I'm sorry to hear about this. In this case, I request you to repair AVG Protection (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG), update (open AVG Internet Security > menu > settings > update) it one more time and reboot your computer once. After reboot, please check if your AVG program is working. If the issue still persists, then please share a screenshot of the AVG User Interface to assist you further. You can post the screenshot here on your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.
Best regards,

Hello, Larry.
I am sorry for the delay in responding. If your issue with AVG Web Shield turning off automatically still persist, I'd request you to download and run the below mentioned script from Terminal.
Script: https://avast.my.salesforce.com/sfc/p/#b0000000Z3Sf/a/0N000000TaYC/XLDU_9WLIBHXRnuXeOhLhWQySndMjaR_oGwJLJC_zlQ .
Every time I reboot now, a ! appears on the AVG Shield. When I look, my "Web Shield" is turned off. It's greyed out so I can't turn it on. If I click on the * and then come back from that page, Web Shield slowly turns itself on. Anyone else having this issue? I believe this just started within the last couple of days. Thanks.
The Issue reoccured after a reboot so I grabbed a screenshot. By the time I cropped the image to send to you, the "Web Shield" was turned on. I guess it came on by itsef after some time, but I didn't notice that ever happening before. I'm using AVG Antivirus and your instructions didn't work on it. I;m not sure if there is something on my computer keeping this from opening or not.

Hello, Larry.
Thank you for providing the screenshot. If it is OS 10.13 High Sierra that you are running on your Mac, AVG extension must be allowed to resolve this issue. Please follow the steps provided in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Allow-AntiVirus-extensions-macOS-High-Sierra to allow AVG software extension.
