May I know if the Trojans warning message was in system desktop or in Browser (while surfing internet)?

I got a warning that I had contracted trojans. Tried to open AVG but it would not open so I could not even uninstall it. I put it in the trash and emptied the trash (bad move) and I still cannot install a new one. How do I get out of this?
