Thanks for your suggestion but as there is no instance of AVG installed on my computer, I don't see how I can uninstall it.

I recently had occasion to uninstall AVG Free and was intending to reinstall it immediately after I had done some housekeeping but when I try to run the latest avg_antivirus_free_setup.exe file downloaded from the Internet on 30th June I get a screen saying:
"AVG installer cannot continue because the last AVG operation was performed without restarting. Please reboot your computer first and then run the installer again"
I must have rebooted about 20 times oveer the last few days but am still getting this message.
Any suggestions as to a solution please?

Let us attempt to clarify this for you, Phil.
The previous installer would install few files on your computer. In order to remove the traces completely, we've suggested you to run AVG Clear tool.

It might also cause the issue, Phil. There cannot be multiple protection program on the same computer, as they will conflict with each other & none will work effectively. Please remove it & then attempt to perform a clean installation of AVG. Before proceeding, please clarify whether there is no AVG icon listed or icon not displayed properly.

We're glad to look into this & help you. This isn't the usual behavior of AVG installer.
In this regard, we'd suggest you to perform a clean installation.
To do so, please uninstall AVG using Clear & then reinstall AVG free antivirus.

Thanks for the clarification Dinesh. I've downloaded and run the AVG Clear tool as you suggested, which appeared to work OK. I then rebooted the PC and attempted to reinstall the avg_antivirus_free_setup.exe file downloaded from the Internet on 30th June. This appear to install OK but I have no desktop icon or any indication that the program is installed. I cannot see the AVGUI.exe file under C:\ program files\avg\antivirus although there are a lot of other files present.
Can you please further?

No, the icon is not showing.
FYI, in view of the problems with AVG I have installed an alternative anti-virus program, Avira and am wondering if there may be a conflict between the two?
