Hello Kurt, thank you for the detailed information. I certainly understand that the usage of your system resources is taken by AVG more and you find the difference in system startup speed randomly. AVG Free antivirus has the Resident Shield will be constantly running on the background and it is obvious that a antivirus program would make use of some system resources. If you find the system startup is taking more time then please uninstall and reinstall your AVG program once and if the issue still persists please do let us know. Thank you.
As requested here is a screenshot of the indication of the problem while it is happening.
Hello Kurt. I apologize for the inconvenience. Please provide us with the screenshot of the issue that you face to assist you further. Thank you.
My computer CPU spikes to 25% intermittantly. Process Explorer shows the culprit is thread 112 avgloga.sys. The driver cannot be suspended or killed for lack of privelege. Suspending protection does nothing, either. The computer must be rebooted to recover the CPU clocks from this miscreant. Is there any fix for this and what causes it?

Hello Kurt. Could you please let me know the AVG program installed on your PC and does it take more time to open your AVG program?
AVG Free Antivirus 2015.0.6125, database 4392/10470, LinkScanner 2721
Installed components AVG Advisor, Anti-Rootkit, Anti-Spyware, AntiVirus, PC Analyzer, Resident Shield, Surf-Shield, Personal Email Scanner
My computer boots in about a minute, as I have streamlined it. Running Windows XP x64 SP2. Opening the program from the quick tray icon takes about two seconds.
As of this writing, the CPU is not spiking. Occurance is random.

Hello Kurt, I certainly understand your concern. I would request you to disable the individual components of your AVG program that too only Online Shield by following the instructions mentioned in this link: http://avgread.me/1Hemdjc and once the online shield is disabled please check up the usage of the system resources. If there is any much difference please do let us know. Thank you.
I said nothing about any differences in system start time. As for the suggestion of reinstalling the program, that is Technese for "Take two of these and call me in the morning." I know. I am an IT professional. Any program that randomly takes up 25% of a four core CPU is malfunctioning. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled AVG a few weeks ago. The problem keeps recurring, so it is not a damaged installation. It may be conflicting with devices I have installed, but a very modern program that is updated frequently should know how to compensate for that. The only two programs that persist in presenting me with CPU usage problems are AVG and Firefox's plugin container.
