We regret for the inconvenience caused. Do you use a a paid or free version of AVG? We suggest you to provide screen-shot (http://avgread.me/1aZxsAV) of the AVG shortcut for better assistance. Thank you.

Frequently AVG adds its own shortcut to my desktop - probably linked to updates or something - How do I get it to stop doing that? I don't need that shortcut and deleting it every time is annoying

Allen, For your info, just in case that you are unaware, you can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.
