AVGSvc.exe is requesting access to a Protected item

AVG AntiVirus Free version 18.6.3066 running on Win XP SP3 will not run a scan.  It gets hung up at 5% with Windows stopping it with a message declaring that AVGSvc.exe is requesting access to a Protected item.  I've uninstalled AVG, run avg_clean, rebooted, re-downloaded the latest version from avg.com and re-installed it and Windows continues to block it.  I can End Task AVGSvc.exe in task manager and all the windows are cleared, otherwise the error window gets 'stuck' on the screen with no way to close it as none of the options offered to close it work or do anything:  OK, Cancel, or X  (Details does indicate that it is the AVGSvc.exe program that is the process that is attempting to access protected data.)  I've seen numerous posts on this but apparently no resolution yet(?)
