Hello Myrle,
We appreciate your efforts in trying to fix the issue. Yes, please try to reinstall latest version of AVG Antivirus free from our official website: https://www.avg.com/en-us/download and check its status.
If the issue persists, provide us the screenshot http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-create-a-screenshot of your CPU usage (task manager) to check and escalate it further.
I experienced the same problem with AVGUI.exe that others
have reported. I had been using AVG antivirus free for several
years with no problems until it updated to version 18.4.3056 on
June 8, 2018. After the update, my HP d530 desktop computer
became just about unusable. Windows task manager showed that
avgui.exe was consuming 100% of the cpu time. Curiously, the
second computer, a Dell Vostro 1500 with the same update at the
same time was unaffected and still runs fine today.
Operating System: Windows XP home edition with SP3, 2Gb of physical memory (Both computers)
HP d530cm Intel Pentium 4 cpu @ 2.8 Ghz
Dell Vostro 1500 Intel Core 2 Duo cpuT5270 @ 1.4 Ghz.
After several attempts to find the problem, including removing
AVG and then reloading it, I finally had to remove it and switch
to a different antivirus program (Norton Internet Security).
I would really like to return to AVG if a solution to the problem
has been determined. I notice that a newer version of AVG
antivirus free is available now (18.5.3059). Has this updated
version included a fix for the avgui.exe excessive cpu drain?
As I mentioned earlier, the Dell Vostro 1500 still functions
normally with avg version 18.4.3056.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Up until this incident,
I was very satisfied with AVG antivirus free software.
