Awsidsagent.exe

After an hour of Baskar remoting into my computer when it wasn't happening, it's now happening again.  I'll be contacting you via the earlier email instructions tomorrow (my time) to investigate further.

Support team:  Thanks for your followup in email that you have a new version of the engine, 2.9, which should fix this issue.  I'm installing it now.   And I'll add to this thread if the problem recurs.

Apparently my response didn't post.  I don't have any other security software installed other than the normal Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.  The transcription of the "about" box in AVG is:

AVG Internet Security
Software version: 20.8.3147 (build 20.8.5684.604)
Virus definitions version: 201101-4
Number of definitions: 16,595,206
Ul version: 1.0.578

Jeffrey, we're glad to hear that everything is normal now.
First of all, please make sure there are no conflicting antivirus software installed on your PC. This file belongs to AVG Software analyzer component.
With every action you do on your PC, there are some thousands of files running on your PC. So for a given file, AVG will compare its code to our virus definitions to mark it as safe.
AVG does this action with some hundreds of files every second to find any malicious file or activity. Sometimes, these action might require more resources.
If this happens too often, please reinstall AVG once and verify the issue.

It's acting up again.  AVGSysinfo is running.  I'll send log files momentarily.

The AVGSysinfo log is uploaded (AVG debugging has been turned on).  Installation of xperf continues to fail from the current installer, and I don't have a previous version installed, so the perf logs are unavailable.

OK, folks, here's a possible hint:  awsidsagent.exe starts going crazy when I run something that requires java.exe.

I'm seeing awsidagent.exe taking up a quarter of my CPU.  (Windows 7 SP1.)  I've read all the community postings about problems with the Software Analyzer.  I've done multiple repairs of AVG and a full uninstall, re-install of the latest bits off the website.

All is well for a short time.  And yet, after some period of time – 50 hours after an uninstall/reinstall, never more than 12 hours after a repair – awsidagent once again takes up a huge amount of CPU.  It seems that running Zoom sometimes, but not always, is the triggering event, though I can run Zoom quite happily for several meetings before things go in the bucket.

What the hell is going on?  What's the actual fix here?

You are most welcome, Jeffrey.
We are available 24/7 to help you.
Have a nice day!

Thank you for letting us know, Jeffrey

Thanks.  I'm collecting the logs now based on the email you sent.  However, as security guys, your download location for the AVG_SysInfo.exe tool should be https, not http.

I stand corrected:  this doesn't happen consistently.  When I run something that requires java, awsidsagent goes into high gear, but it doesn't always get stuck.  It's possible that the consistent triggering sequence for getting stuck is a procedure that runs a python script followed by a java program.  The particular python script invokes both AES and RSA encryption modules.

You're still not answering my underlying question.  Yes, I understand that awsidsagent.exe is part of the AVG software analyzer.  I understand that it needs to the check programs that I'm running.  And, as someone who spent more than a decade as a member of the core development group for Microsoft Windows, I have a vague understanding that there are lots of files on my PC, and actually what some of them do – particularly the programs I created.

However, I don't understand why this particular component of AVG periodically takes so much of my CPU and up to a gigabyte of memory.  If the purpose is that it operates in background and checks files against virus signatures to make sure no file has been newly infected, that's cool.  But that shouldn't pop up to high priority at random.  Particularly when I'm doing something else that's already taking a chunk of the CPU.  Like viewing PDF files which I've already viewed and are unchanged.  Or starting up Microsoft Word on an empty file.  Or opening a LibreOffice Calc spreadsheet.  I've already reinstalled AVG once, and repaired it numerous times.

Hi Jeffrey,

This isn't the usual behavior of AVG program. Let us work towards fixing the issue.
Kindly check and mention the version of the AVG application that is installed in your PC.
And also check in the Control Panel that if you have any other security application installed.
Awaiting your response.

It's acting up again.  AVGSysinfo is running.  I'll send log files momentarily.

No other security application is installed, other than the usual Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Here's the "about" panel from AVG.
