The screen on my LAPTOP is black, they keyboard is unresponsive and there is no mouse-pointer.

My laptop runs WIndows 8.1 (I think). When I get an upgrade it restarts and the screen goes BLACK FOREVER. Sometimes I give up and power off and it sometimes comes right.
Also I am STILL getting problems on both machines with AVG wiping my Firefox passwords.

If you are able to get into safe mode successfully, try to uninstall AVG Internet Security.
Once it is done, restart the computer and check whether it logs into windows normally.
If yes, we can confirm that the problem is because of AVG Internet Security.

Ian, this must be a conflict with the recent windows update.
Since the PC is not starting up in safe mode as well, we'd request you to contact a local technician or Microsoft support for help.
