Blocked Executable File

Hello Sydney,
Let's work together to fix it.
Could you share the screenshot of that detection message to have a better understanding?
If you are sure that product is a legitimate one, you can uninstall that application, add exception in AVG product and then reinstall it.
Please check and monitor the status. We are here if you need further help.

Karthikeyan - omg thank you so much. I tried both options, but neither returned any success. Any other thoughts? Will removing AVG allow it through?

I know I've written a novel, but -

Program:
    AVG Anti-Virus Free (Basic Protection)

Issue:
AVG blocked an executable file (an encryption installer so the USB device that it runs on can be read) that isn't a virus. When I clicked on the file to install the program, AVG threw up a quick message saying it thought it was a virus. I didn't see the message until it disappeared and I put my head on the desk because I knew how this would go. So. Here we are.
The file cannot be opened on the laptop with AVG, but works on other laptops. I've seen this issue before, not with the free version, but when I was admin for AVG business. What we had to do in the past was locate the file, remove it so AVG releases it from being a threat and then add it to the exceptions list.
I don't want to just uninstall AVG as a troubleshooting method because I don't know how the uninstaller works. I know AVG has its hands dug pretty deep in the machine so what happens when I remove AVG? Does it keep those "threats" at bay regardless of whether its installed or not? I don't want to blow away AVG without knowing the answer to that first.

What I've Tried:

  • Looked in quarantine - it displays nothing
  • Enabled passive mode and tried to open the file
  • Disabled AVG features with no avail
  • Looked through some of the logs to find the path, though it was back in Feb when it was blocked and I know some of the logs get removed after a 30 day period
  • Threw the file into the exceptions list, but it still needs to be released from AVG
Help.

Ranjani - I'm worried it won't. Also, as I said above, I added the program to the exceptions list which isn't allowing it through. Can I have more validation that removing AVG will solve the problem?

It worries me because if it's deleted via AVG then do those "virus" files just get released onto the machine after AVG is uninstalled? It doesn't make sense from an anti-virus perspective to just abandon ship on those files after program removal.

Same results, again meaning, nothing happens.

Sydney,
Do you still receive the same error while clicking on its exe file?
Please share the screenshot of that error message to have a better understanding.

Didn't work. AVG is completely removed from the computer, including C drive folders. Won't release it

Dinesh,

I've already done that and I said I did in the message above. Guys. Please. Where is AVG blocking the file. Where does it put blocked files that it considered viruses.Where on the C drive do I need to dig to find this

Ranjani - I'm trying not to be frustrated, but I can tell you didn't read my thread, otherwise you would know I can't install the application nor can I replicate the error message.

This isn't the experience we want you to have, Sydney.
From your description, we see that AVG blocks a program to be installed on your computer. Usually AVG blocks files if they are found to be malicious.
If you believe that the application is legitimate, you can disable AVG temporarily (Right click on AVG icon in system tray, near date & time - Click on the toggle bar beside Protection) & then proceed to install the program.
After installing it, re-enable the AVG protection & then add it to exceptions.
Please try the above step & let us know if it helps.

That's unfortunate the issue persists even after the uninstallation of AVG.

I have sent you an email to get connected with our advanced support, please follow the steps from the email and the concerned team will check this for you.

Sydney, we understand your concern.

In this scenario, it is only solution we have for now. So, please uninstall the AVG from your computer and check for the issue again.

In the mean time Windows defender will give you a basic protection for your computer.

Yes, Sydney.
You can uninstall AVG to install that application and check if it works.
If AVG detects them after re-installation, you can try to add it in the exception list.
