From time to time I will open chrome and do a search and then the answer will be displayed in bing. There will be a box asking me to accept the new settings. Which I did once not realising what had happened and suddenly my searc engine was bing.
the key thing being that the initial search was done in chrome but the results from the search were displayed in bing. At the time of the results being displayed I am also asked to accept the new settings. Which i did on the first occasion as i was working on something. After the second search it was presenting everything in bing. So I went to manage search engines and there it was bing was my default search engine. I deleted bing from my search engines in chrome, IE, and edge. I carried on with my work. 5 days later the same thing happened. But this time I closed my browser and restarted it. I then did the same search and it returned the results as normal in chrome. Another 5 days passed and then exactly the same thing happened whilst searching for something else. And the same box appeared asking me to accept the new settings. This time however, closing my browser did not change the results of a search request. Eventually I uninstalled chrome and that fixed the issue after I reinstalled it. 8 days later the same message pops after I had done a search. So I closed my browser and it fixed the issue. I am currently waiting for it to occur again
Hi, Paul
We will help you in this.
How did you figure that there was a browser hijack and you device is afftected by a virus?
AVG would have notified you if your device is infected or not.
I have been using AVG for several years now and until now I have been very happy with it. I am currently thinking of Upgrading to Ultimate to take advantage of the other things that AVG has.
I download a lot of content from many sources online, and I always scan them with AVG before unpacking and installing, I also never go to sites that show up as a threat. I will leave and try to find what I am looking for elsewhere.
Having said all of that, some how in the past month or two I have picked up a browser hijacker, as I am unable to determine which downloaded file or app was the culprit I cannot identify where the virus is located and doing a scan is no use either.
The hijack occurs at random intervals between 5 to 10 days and means I have to shut down and restart chrome or occasionally delete it and reinstall it. I have removed Bing from all my browsers (Bing being the target of this virus) and deleted any browser that I physically can. other than Chrome.
How can I find this virus and get rid of it as AVG seems unable to do so, and it also gave the green light to everything I have ever downloaded to my machine.
As I am coming to the end of my current subscription I have been thinking of upgrading to AVG Ultimate, I am asking myself will this locate the hijacker or should I be looking elsewhere for my internet protection|?
Can anyone help me?

Paul, thank you for explaining in detail.
This behavior could be caused by a potentially unwanted program. I would request you to check and remove any unwanted applications from your PC.
